2010-2011 School Theme: Food

"All creation is a gift. All of us are called to a special reverence and respect for God’s creation. Nurturing and tilling the soil, harnessing the vitality of water to grow food, and caring for animals and their habitats are forms of this stewardship. The Church has repeatedly taught that the misuse of God’s creation betrays the gift God has given us for the good of the entire human family."
--United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

To honor the Lasallian call to respond to the poor and overcome injustice, we at La Salle Catholic College Preparatory continue with our annual school-wide theme centered on a topic of social concern. We hope that through the integration of this theme into the appropriate curricular areas and other school programming, students will not only develop the ability to think critically, but also become seekers of justice in a world that needs our compassion and action.

Our Essential Question:
Is it just food?

This year’s theme focuses on the complexities surrounding food, specifically related to health, the environment, the economy, and those experiencing hunger. We aim to have students think critically about the complexities surrounding food growth and production, food choices and health, the relationship between food and the environment, and the current food crisis which impacts billions of people around the world. We hope that through the academic curriculum, the implementation of a school garden, speakers, service opportunities, and other school programming, students will take responsibility for their own food choices and become advocates for those without access to healthy food.

Important Dates:

Enduring Understandings for School Theme

From Big Ideas: Linking Food, Culture, Health, and the Environment:

Growing and producing food is a complex process that requires making trade-offs among such factors as economics, environmental costs and benefits, public health implications, animal welfare, and personal views.

The decisions a society makes about food, food production, and food practices are influenced by the prevalent culture’s values, assumptions and norms.

A variety of factors influence health decisions at both the personal and the societal level, including marketing, media messages, scientific information, public policy, personal preferences, and one’s friends.

Human activities can affect the balance of food webs on which we vitally depend.

From United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

The right to life of all persons, based on their identity as children of God, means that all people have basic rights to those things that are necessary for them to live and thrive, including the right to food.
