2009 Fall Sports Recap/State Championships Preview
By Travis McGuire '99

Five of La Salle’s six fall sports teams will send representatives to their respective OSAA State Championships in November 2009. La Salle’s boys’ soccer, volleyball, and boys’ cross country teams all repeated as conference champions and the Falcons will send two runners from the girls’ cross country team to the OSAA 4A State Championships. The girls’ soccer program will bumped the total to five programs entering state competition with a 2-1 over North Marion in the Capital Conference playoffs.

The Capital Conference volleyball title will remain in Milwaukie as La Salle won their second consecutive conference championship. La Salle’s shot at the title was in doubt toward the end of the season, when La Salle lost 3-2 at Estacada. The Rangers narrowed the Falcons lead to one game, however La Salle responded with three straight 3-0 wins over North Marion, Gladstone, and Stayton to finish league play. The Falcons finished the 2009 season with a 25-5-1 overall record and wins over 6A #10 Aloha and 4A #10 Estacada. La Salle finished 11-1 in the Capital Conference with eight 3-0 sweeps. The fourth-ranked Falcons host the fifth-ranked Sisters Outlaws in the 2nd round of the OSAA 4A State Championships on Saturday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m.

The boys’ soccer team held off surging Molalla for their third Capital Conference title with a 0-0 tie over Gladstone. The Falcons finished with an overall record of 10-3-2 and an 8-2-2 conference record; good enough for the number one seed out of the Capital Conference. La Salle can credit their defense for their second consecutive Capital Conference title. The Falcons led the league with 13 goals against in only 15 matches. That defense will be tested on November 10, 2009 in the 2nd round of the OSAA 4A State Championships, when the Falcons host the winner of Ontario/Sisters at 6:30 p.m.

La Salle’s fourth-ranked boys’ cross country team won their fourth consecutive Capital Conference District Meet, giving them the outright Capital Conference championship for 2009. Six of La Salle’s seven varsity runners finished in the top 20, with three in the top eight. Junior Sean O’Hollearn took fourth with a time of 16:39, six seconds behind Brad Prettyman of Estacada. La Salle will send juniors Rachel Silver and Meredith Barrett from the girls’ team to the OSAA State Championships. Silver finished fourth, while Barrett finished 11th at the district meet. The 2009 OSAA 4A State Championships will be held at Lane Community College in Eugene on Saturday, November 7. The girls’ meet will begin at 11:25 a.m., and the boys’ meet will begin at noon.

The Falcon girls’ soccer team captured third place in Special District #2 and a spot in the 4A/3A/2A/1A State Championships with a their victory over North Marion. La Salle finished the regular season with an 9-6-1 overall record and an 8-3-1 record in Special District #2. Cottage Grove will host the Falcons at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 in the first round of the OSAA State Championships. Cottage Grove enters the match as the second seed out of Special District #5.
