2009 Spring Sports Recap
by Brian Crawford, La Salle Athletics Director

La Salle student-athletes performed very well in the 2009 Spring sports season.

The Boys’ Golf team finished the season undefeated in league play. They won the conference tournament and advanced to the state championships as a team for the first time since 1999. After the first day of the championships they held the lead by one stroke. They finished in second place and will only lose one team member to graduation. Garrett Wisbaum finished in second place as an individual with a two day total of 146 for 36 holes.

Members of the La Salle Girls’ Golf team, Carly Christoferson and Victoria Johnson, finished second and third in the conference tournament and advanced to the state championships as individuals. Carly finished in 29th place and Victoria in 45th place. They will both return next year and the girls’ team has a goal to qualify for the state tournament as an entire team.

The Boys’ Tennis team sent three team members to the state championships. Freshmen Max Hey finished second at the conference championships and advanced to the state championships. Seniors Cameron Brand and Tahir Mahmood won the conference championships. They received a first round bye at the state tournament and then defeated three opponents as they advanced through the bracket. They eventually lost when they played for third place.

The Girls’ Tennis team did well during the regular season winning several close battles with conference opponents. The success of the number 4 and 5 players on the team frequently was the difference in team scoring. The girls’ team is lucky to have talented athletes playing on the team from JV up to varsity and although they were disappointed that no team members advanced to the state tournament, they are confident that they will next year.

The Softball team played all of their varsity home games on a new field. There were more girls out for softball than there have been in recent years and although they had no seniors, they defeated Estacada twice and lost close games to Stayton and Molalla. Next year the softball team will have a solid group of seniors with a lot of playing experience.

The Baseball team finished the regular season in fourth place. They hosted Stayton for a league playoff. Bobby Ragasa pitched a great game and hit a homerun to help move past Stayton. The boys then traveled to Cascade to determine the third and final state playoff spot for the Capital Conference. Senior Nick Dieringer pitched a complete game no hitter with 16 strikeouts. That victory set up a long trip to eastern Oregon, where the falcons were matched up against La Grande. La Salle lost a close game to finish off their season.

The Track and Field team had nine athletes qualify for the state championships. Senior Simeon Dixon was the conference champion in the shot put and finished second at state. Gabe Asch qualified for the 400 meters and finished in 9th place at state. Maddie Morton finished in 10th place in the 3000 meter run. The girls 4 x 400 meter relay made up of Elizabeth Dana, Brittany Elsesohn, Mackenzie Lisac and Laura Schmitt, finished in 5th place. Laura Schmitt also won the conference championship in the 200 meters and the 400 meters. At the state championships she missed first place in the 200 meters by one hundredth of a second. Schmitt won the state championships in the 400 meters with an impressive time of 57.27 seconds.

Congratulations to all of our La Salle student-athletes. They represented the school very well throughout the year.
